Council ‘fobbed us off’ over pollution A small stream that runs alongside the popular Bill Wilkes Reserve in Richmond is being polluted and neighbouring residents and park users have been frustrated at the lack of concern from the Tasman District Council. A group of friends who walk their dogs through the reserve first noticed the pollution coming from a stormwater pipe and flowing into Jimmy Lee Creek about a month ago. It has happened a number of times since then and Idesia Grove resident Ozzie Wahrlich says he has contacted

the council to investigate the problem but nothing has happened. “I’ve called the council three times now about this and they haven’t done anything,” Ozzie says. “They won’t get off their backsides - they just keep fobbing me off.” Stoke resident Marion Brook says they are concerned not just about the impact on the environment but also for the safety of children and dogs. Marion says the reserve is a popular dog-walking area and she knows of two dogs that have become ill after drinking from the polluted stream.

She had to take it to the vet so I hope it was alright.” “The same thing happened to one of our friends’ dog a few weeks ago. We were walking along talking when we noticed that his dog was not playing and wanted

to lie in the shade - he ended up having to pick him up and carry him home and take him to the vet.” Marion says she has also phoned council about the problem but so far hasn’t had a response. “I called the TDC the first time I saw the pollution [November 10] and was told that there was no one available to come and see the mess. I called again when it was there today [December 3] and was told

Richmond shopper wins $5000 cash Last year, William Healey saw the Shop ‘n Win entry forms in Advanced Automotive’s Richmond workshop but says he “didn’t bother filling them out because I’ll never win it”. But this year he decided to give it a go, filling out one of the entry forms when he was at Advanced Automotive and it paid off, with William, last Thursday, winning the top prize of $5000 cash. William’s big win was also a bonus for Advanced Automotive’s Tony and Janine Grainger who received $1500 for submitting the winning entry. A record 78,000 entries were received for this year’s Shop ‘n Win promotion, which was run by the Waimea Weekly and Richmond Mall and gave shoppers a chance to win $7500. Richmond shopper, Sharon Riordan, had earlier won $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers in the first stage of the competition drawn last month. “I thought Tony was having me on when he phoned and said I’d won,” William says. “I’ve never really won anything big before and I only put in two entries, so the odds weren’t good.

“I filled in the entry when I was waiting at the counter Advanced Automotives and said to Tony ‘if I win I’ll do the diff on the car’. It was making a bit of a noise so I guess I’ll be able to get it fixed now.” However, William’s wife Trish pointed out that she was entitled to some of the prizemoney because it was her email address on the entry form. “I might just get a handout,” she joked. Tony says William has been a regular customer at Advanced Automo-

that someone else had called them about it but couldn’t say if anyone would come to check. “We are really concerned about this situation so I hope they do something. I’m sure they can work out where it’s coming from because they’ll have plans of the stormwater drains.” TDC’s Chris Choat says the council last week started looking for the source of the pollution which was possibly paint or a household cleaner. He could not explain why the council had taken so long to respond to the complaints although says they are taking it seriously “because stormwater flows into the rivers and sea”. However, Chris says finding the source of the pollution could be difficult because it drains such a big area. He says people need to read the labels of any products to make sure they were safe before pouring them into the stormwater drains.

tive since they opened at their Cargill Place workshop in July 2008. He estimates that William’s entry form was one of about 100 filled in at their workshop. The big prize was drawn under supervision at the Richmond police station last Thursday and Weekly advertising manager Sue Davies says it signalled the end of another successful promotion. “It’s a fantastic way to retailers to thank their customers for their support,” Sue says. All the shops in the Richmond Mall and 38 others around Richmond participated in the promotion.

Pet dog dies after swim in Wai-iti river

more properties needed Four bedrooms, Henley School zone. Up to $450K.

Simon Bloomberg

The latest dog-poisoning tragedy in the Wai-iti River has prompted scientists to consider a review of the safety guidelines for the toxic blue-green algae that is infesting rivers throughout Nelson and Tasman. Dylan Hedges and Maria Whitley’s five-year-old dog, Rosie, died within 30 minutes of swimming in the Wai-iti River near Spring Grove last Thursday. Although the cause of Rosie’s death has not been confirmed, Dylan suspects she was poisoned by the toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria. “She was only five and super-fit and healthy, but she looked a bit unwell when we came back from the river,” Dylan says. “I put her in her kennel and went back out to check half an hour later, and she was dead. “She loved to fetch sticks and I guess that’s how she may have ingested the algae. She was a lovely dog and we’ll miss her - we buried her and planted a white rose on her grave.” Although council environmental scientist, Trevor James, says they have been monitoring levels of the toxic algae in

National guidelines state that the algae only represents a public health risk when it covers 20 per cent or more of the riverbed, but Trevor says that needs to be reviewed. “We have been monitoring the rivers weekly, including that site at Spring Grove, but it hadn’t reached the 20 per cent coverage. When it reaches that level we put up signs warning people about the dangers but after last week’s poisoning

we are considering putting up permanent warning signs at the high-risk sites.” Trevor says there had also been an incident where a dog died after swimming at a site where the coverage of the toxic algae was only three per cent. It was also the second dog death in the Wai-iti River. Trevor says that dangerous levels of the algae are confined to the Wai-iti and Waimea rivers on the Waimea Plains as well as the Takaka, Sherry and Wangapeka rivers and owners should take their dogs to swim in the Lee, Roding and Wairoa rivers to avoid high-risk sites.

Nelson tops NZ’s spending growth

Andrew Board

Nelson and Tasman’s spending growth was the highest in the country last month and a lot of that is down to tourists, say eftpos provider Paymark. Paymark released its November figures yesterday and it showed Nelson, which includes Tasman, leading the way with 8.1 per cent growth. This year, $91.6 million was spent through the network,

compared to last year’s $84.7 million. Paymark’s Mark Spicer says Nelson and Otago were the regions with the highest growth rates in the country. “This may be attributed to the strong growth in spending on accommodation that we have seen this year, as well as the consistent increases in the food and beverage sectors. “For example, Nelson and Otago are popular destinations for

kiwis and tourists.” Nationally, the growth rate was 5.2 per cent. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says the Paymark figures have been really good for Nelson two months in a row and, with the Christmas season upon us, it will only get better. “Traditionally it’s the second week of December when Christmas spending really kicks in and retailers are saying it’s definitely started.”

Backdown expected on dam

We’ll get you moving

Simon Bloomberg A protest against the proposed $74.6 million Waimea Community Dam may have more of a celebratory mood with the Tasman District Council signalling it is going to reject the plan because it is “not affordable for the council and the community.” Hundreds of protestors are expected to converge on the council’s Richmond offices on Thursday to make it loud and clear that they don’t want the dam. The Dam Protest has been organised by the Waimea Irrigators and Water Users Group, which has been one of the biggest opponents of the dam in the Lee Valley, to coincide with the last full council meeting of the year. Chairwoman, Mary Ellen O’Connor, says they are staging the protest to “make it loud and clear to council” that the funding models for the dam are unaffordable and unfair. The dam project has been widely condemned during the public consultation process that concluded last week and Mary Ellen says they just want to underline that sentiment. “I know the public consultation has shown that the majority of people think the dam is unaffordable but we just want to make the message crystal clear,” she says. “The council has also gone a very long way down the wrong track on this so we need to keep active right up to the end.” However, Tasman district Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the protest will not be necessary because council accepts the only way an irrigation dam in the Lee Valley can be “made affordable” is to secure “significant external funding”. He also agrees that the funding models are “inequitable and unfair” and says that a report to council recommends that the scope of the project needed to be reviewed and the contribution from ratepayers reduced. Richard says the key concerns were affordability and fairness with many landowners saying they couldn’t afford to pay the extra rates to fund the dam. The council is also concerned at the “compulsion” of the funding options that would have forced landowners on the Waimea Plains to pay a water-users charge for the dam when some of them didn’t want or need the water. Council will now consider funding an up to $25 million dam, solely for the urban water needs and a contribution to the environmental flows “The council funding will be for $25 million for urban water and environmental flows which will be more affordable for both council and ratepayers. If there is to be extra funding for irrigation, that will be separate to council - we don’t want to subsidise irrigation.” Richard says that decision simplified the process and would make it easier for council and irrigators to negotiate with the government’s Crown Irrigation Fund. Council is presently seeking funding from Crown Irrigation to pay for an irrigation component in the dam. Although the public consultation process has been difficult, Richard says it has provided significant value to council on the affordability of the dam. “It has been pretty bruising because there is a lot of strong sentiment out there. But we got a lot of good feedback and we have listened to it. “It would have been nice if we could get everything right from the start but it doesn’t work like that. What people need to realise is that we are here to do our best for the community.” The protest is scheduled to take place from

Theft a ‘low blow’ for butcher A Nelson butcher who has battled through the Canterbury earthquakes, the 2011 floods and a major fire six months ago, has now been the victim of a burglary. Ulrich Heck owns German Gourmet Butchery in the Wakatu Estate and has just opened his doors again after re-building his butchery from a major fire. Before that, it was the flood that destroyed numerous businesses in Stoke and Richmond. Before that his store was ruined by the Canterbury earthquakes. On Monday morning, Ulrich discovered that his butchery had been robbed of thousands of dollars worth of Christmas hams and salamis. He says the thieves would have

needed a truck because the 1400kg worth of meat wouldn’t have fitted in a car. “I’m stunned, shocked, I can’t believe it. I’m pissed off, I’m really pissed off. But anyway, I must just cope.” Police say the incident could have occurred any time between Friday night and Monday morning. Sergeant Craig Barker, of the Tactical Crime Unit, there were about 30 large Christmas hams, several hundred salamis and a large quantity of steak. Ulrich says he can’t believe his own rotten luck and says a Lotto jackpot wouldn’t go amiss. “I think I have deserved it.” Anyone with information should call police on 546 3840.

Mike’s class and dignity through the entire process has been a credit to him and his family. He may have lost his battle but his continued desire to live life to the fullest shows the spirit of the man. In the first article that Waimea

His and her moonboots Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

There’s all kinds of weird and wonderful “his and hers” items advertised these days but Upper Moutere couple, Yvette and Glenn Grant, have one that is both unique and painful - his and hers moonboots. Yvette was the first to get fitted out in a moonboot after breaking her left foot playing softball at the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast in early November. Three weeks later, Glenn received his moonboot at Nelson Hospital after breaking his left leg in a motorcycle accident on their Upper Moutere lifestyle block. “We have been getting quite a ribbing about it,” Yvette admits. “People were sympathetic when I broke my foot but the everyone thought it was funny when Glenn broke his leg and there were two of us in moonboots. You should see the looks we get when we go shopping in the mall. But everyone has also been really helpful - we have had offers of automatic cars to drive and lots of people are calling around to see if we need any help.” Although Glenn was in a lot of pain when he broke his leg, he could still see the lighter side of his mishap. And so could the emergency services crews

Yvette and Glenn Grant have a his-and-hers matching moonboots after breaking their foot and leg respectively. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. who responded to the 111 call. “I managed to get back to the house and then I got a text from Yvette asking if I wanted to go out on a date tonight. I replied and said ‘no I think I’ve broken my leg and you might be taking me to the hospital instead.’ “When she arrived, she took one look and called 111. I had a big gash in my leg and all this blood in my gumboot so it was a real mess. The next

thing everyone turned up - the ambulance, police, fire brigade and rescue helicopter and even another fire water tanker. I know the fire guys and when they came to the door they just stood there laughing - they couldn’t believe I’d broken my leg too.” Life at the Grant house will return to normal, for Yvette at least, this week when she is due to have her moonboot removed.

Property insights Communication There is the telephone, there is e-mail and there is text messaging - and all three of these communication tools are now used all day, every day. Lots of different factors now have to be considered when you want to make contact with an agent and the very best way is still a phone call, preferably to the office. Office receptionists will know when the agent is available and they can give you a guide as to whether or not the agent is within phone coverage and/or can take a message to pass on. Professional agents will not answer their mobile phones while they are with a client as your business should be private and confidential. If you do phone an agent’s mobile, be sure to leave a message - it will ensure a reply. Almost all real estate agents now have handsfree telephones in their cars.

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

Text messaging is not the most efficient use of communication for business unless the message is short and straight forward. Just a quick note: country agents are often out of range for several hours. They will receive your messages when they are back in service. It is always best practice to leave a message. Reliable agents will always return calls within a reasonable timeframe.

If you have a property related question then e-mail me and I will see if I can help you. lydia@heyward.co.nz

We are well into that silly season where the retailers urge us to buy the things they think are necessary to make Christmas. Then there is that almost magic deadline as everyone wants things done before Christmas – why, I don’t know, as most places no longer participate in the great New Zealand shut down. Come December 25, we will all sigh relief as we have made it once again through the canned Christmas music in the mall and the letterbox filled with flyers urging us to buy. But there is one more hurdle to cross the playing of happy families as the food is prepared and consumed and relatives not seen from one year to the next troop through the door, re-telling the old family stories about your exploits as a child. Can the Christmas Spirit be brought, packaged and delivered? Well, there are all the wrappings of Christmas, the

decorations, the food, and alcohol, but even with all the trimmings it is possible to miss the point. I venture to suggest the spirit of Christmas that people talk Rev Martin about is something Harrison that can’t be bought Brightwater or sold. Community The heart of the Church. Christmas spirit is love and relationship. Don’t settle for a cheap imitation of the Christmas Spirit this year, stop, and enjoy giving and receiving love and developing the relationships that you have with the people around you and in the community. The most precious gift cannot be measured in monetary value, it is time.

Why not invest some of your time into those who you live with and the communities you live within. There are community celebrations happening all over the place. Here in Brightwater we have Carols by Glo lite on December 13 at Snowdens Bush. Or, perhaps, call in to your local church where there is a celebration every week. As you do, remember each of us have been given an incredible gift of love and relationship that is waiting for us all to unwrap. So great is the gift it takes a lifetime to appreciate. The gift of a baby who grew up and changed the course of history. Jesus said “Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me”. Rev 3:20. Will you accept this gift, freely given and unwrap it?

New home for 280 classic motorcycles

One of the largest classic motorbike collections in the southern hemisphere has a new home, on Nelson’s Haven Rd. A passion for classic and vintage motorcycles has led to the new New Zealand Classic Motorcycles, owned by Nelson-based businessman and philanthropist, Tom Sturgess. The collection showcases Tom’s more than 280 diverse classic and vintage motorcycle and sidecar combinations. There also is a smattering of micro and three-wheeled cars. Soon information will be available on the bikes and vehicles via QR codes, accessible via electronic devices such as smart phones. “I have always been fascinated with motorcycles and one thing

monique@waimeaweekly.co.nz just led to another,” Tom says. The collection includes vehicles from Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, England, France, Netherlands, USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium and New Zealand. The oldest classic motorcycles on display are a 1902 Peugeot Perfecta and 1902 rideable Motosacoche. The display holds one of the largest collections of Brough Superior motorcycles, as well as a wide selection of Indians and vintage four-cylinder American motorcycles. One of Tom’s personal favourites is a very special 1914 Clyno, worked on

by world class restorer, Richard Conlon from Tasman. Tom is thrilled that there is a distinct New Zealand content to the bikes. “Some of these bikes have been in New Zealand for over 100 years and many of these bikes have racing cachet as well as much of the restoration work having been done by generations of talented New Zealanders.” In addition to the motorcycles, there are also vintage motorcycle posters from the early 1900s, primarily European, on display and a viewable workshop with three active stations. “These bikes are not static; we have some quite talented people who work on them; it is every bit as interesting to watch them working on the bikes as the bikes themselves. Many of these wouldn’t be in the condition or display state they are in without the work of project manager Wayne Daniel, specialised mechanic Steve Scullion, machinist Alan Malaquin and volunteer Alistair Ford,” Tom says. The New Zealand Classic Motorcycle building will target the high-end tourism market but will also be open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Entry is $20 per adult and $15 per child under 15 years, with ongoing donations being made to local Nelson charities and organisations. For Richmond’s Grace Church, Christmas is a truly special time and the lead up to Christmas Day has already begun with several activities planned. The Kid’s Christmas Lights Competition is the Daryl Smith perfect way to get kids into the spirit of ChristOwner/Operator mas while having a heap of fun too. Children are challenged to create a scene depicting what the all important day means to them. There are some specifications of course, all entries have to be constructed on a base no bigger than 50 centimetres square and it has to be lit up, whatever way they can think of, the brighter the better. The children have until December 17 to get their entries completed and looking fantastic before they’re delivered to the Headingly Centre. Entries will then be put on display during the much anticipated Light Up Nelson trail. Grace Church is number four on the light up trail, although they aren’t actually a part of the overall competition. People can get maps of the town and country houses taking part in the competition

and drive around, admiring the stunning Christmas light displays. The Church will be acting as a “pit stop” during the three nights of December 19, 20 and 21. The front of their property will be lit up too, and people are more than welcome to stop off at The Headingly Centre, grab a toilet break, some cocoa and biscuits and listen to the Churches talented musicians, before heading back out on the road to see the rest of the lights. The break is also the perfect opportunity to have a look at the children’s creations and vote on which one they think deserves to win a prize. The prizes include bikes, scooters, Richmond Mall vouchers, a unicycle and some smaller spot prizes; generously sponsored by Village Cycles, Ray White Real Estate and Grace Church. Everyone is welcome to visit so don’t miss out on a great night of Christmas lights, live music and the friendly hospitality of Grace Church. At the same time, Grace Church will be erecting their giant star above the hills of Richmond.

Christmas Events at Grace Church and The Headingly Centre The twelve metre star is visible from everywhere around Richmond and can be seen just above Champion Rd. The star will shine out over the town until Christmas Eve, and is just one way the church hope to remind people of the true message of Christmas. On December 14, Grace Church will be hosting it’s free Kid’s Christmas Party. Running from 10am until 12pm, the Christmas party is a morning of nothing but fun and games. With a lolly scramble, lots of prizes, Christmas story puppets, a barbeque, cake, bouncy castle, magic show, candy floss and most importantly a parent’s cafe, it’s a day that will entertain everyone. Head along to the Headingly Centre and if you would like more information, give the church a call on 544 7071. Their other Christmas events include a family Christmas service on Sunday, December 21 from 10am, and the special Christmas Day service

from 10am until 11am on Thursday, December 25. These services are for everyone to attend, along with a service in the park on Sunday, December 28. Bring a picnic, chairs or a blanket and enjoy their church service on the park like grounds of Headingly Centre from 5:50pm. “Christmas can be a busy, expensive and often stressful time for families. The events we have planned are all free … they are a gift, a gift to families as a reminder of the gift given to us all. It’s such a pivotal time for the Christian faith, and so, as a church we want to say, “Hey, don’t forget what it’s all about.” It’s about the best gift of all, God’s gift to us of His Son Jesus,” says Grace Church’s Linda Gill. For any further information on the events happening at Grace Church, give them a call on 544 7071, email them at info@gracechurch.co.nz or call in to see the staff at 542 Lower Shaelea Branje, Charlotte Ferguson, Shakya Stanton, Jewel Rangi and Paige Fergusson get to work on their Christmas scenes that will be a part of the Light Up Nelson Trail later on in December. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Judging by the number of trailers parked at the boat ramp every fine morning, it certainly looks like a lot of people are making the most of the snapper. However, as the snapper are starting to spawn within the next couple of weeks, it will be getting much harder to catch them. This quieter period normally lasts over the summer holidays, and is then followed by increased feeding activity once the snapper have completed their spawning and need a good feed. Now can be a good time of the year to change your fishing tactics and focus on some of the other species that also migrate into Tasman Bay over the summer. Kingfish would have to be one of the best inshore sports fish there is. With the rising water temperature, kingies can be found along our rocky shore and reefs. There are different techniques of targeting them. Live bait is one option that can prove very successful. Tight balls of baitfish on your sounder can be a good indication of larger fish hoarding them into a ball. Small kawai or mackerel make good live bait that can be trawled at low speed but is best used when

anchoring or slow drift over some reefs. Lures come in all shapes and sizes and we all have a favourite one that works best for us. Reality is that different sea, light and weather conditions make different lures work better than others. It’s always good to have a variety to choose from. On a calm day, we sometimes tow as many as eight lures behind the boat to increase our chances. It’s best to stack them at different depth and length behind the boat. Kingfish are a very curious fish that can be attracted to anything shiny, bubbling or rattling. Kingfish are great eating fresh, as sashimi or marinated raw. They are a tough fish that are easy to catch and release, with some care. One kingfish can feed four people for several days and once it’s all gone you got a good reason to go out fishing again. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club caters for young and old who are interested in fishing. On the 13th December they hold a kids’ fishing evening at Appleby ponds, which is a great fun day for kids of all ages. Check out the new website www. dawnbreakers.co.nz for more info.

Dry and windy month hurts local farmers Simon Bloomberg A cold, dry and windy spring is hitting farmers on the Waimea Plains and delaying the berry season, with one agricultural contractor saying it has been the worst baleage-making season in 10 years. Pastures on the Waimea Plains may look green but Aaron Baigent of Riverstone Baleage says the grass has been drying out fast and “doesn’t have any guts”. He estimates that the yield of baleage from grass paddocks on the Waimea Plains is 20 to 30 per cent lower than last year and is the “worst season I have ever had” in 10 years of contracting. “I’ve been cutting the same number of paddocks but the yield is well down. The grass looks alright but there’s nothing there - the wind has dried it out and it doesn’t have any guts to it. “All the contractors I have spoken to are in the same boat. Unless we get a lot of rain and it starts to warm up there will be bugger-all second cuts this season.” The latest NIWA figures show that only 99 millimetres of rain fell in Nelson in the spring, 39 per cent of the seasonal average and the fourth lowest total since records started in 1941. Just 13mm of rain fell in Nelson in November, resulting in some of the lowest soil moisture levels in the country. Contractor Steve Sangster agreed that the wind and lack of rain resulted in grass production being “down probably around 10 to 15 per cent on the Waimea Plains” and that would put a “premium on the price of good quality baleage this season”. Steve says the changeable weather over the last 10 days has compounded the problem because it was disrupting haymaking which had started earlier this year because of the dry conditions. “It’s been touch and go this season - some places have been good and other have been poor. What we really need is a good four days of rain before Christmas so we can get a second cut.” Nelson Federated Farmers president and Tapawera dairy farmer, Martin O’Connor, says the Waimea Plains and coastal areas are the worst affected because of the combination of a lack of rain and exposure to persistent drying southerly winds. He says Murchison farmers are also “struggling with feed” because of an exceptionally cold, wet

Agricultural contractor, Steve Sangster, has been making the best of a difficult season for making baleage and hay. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. spring but Tapawera has had “enough showers” and warm temperatures to promote good pasture growth. “It depends where you are really. Tapawera has had the rain and growth and farmers have made plenty of silage and baleage but the Waimea Plains aren’t looking too good. They had plenty of growth early on and made a lot of good silage but that they haven’t had any followup rain.” Martin says Waimea Plains farmers may “have to batten down the hatches” if the drying southerly winds continued. The cold, dry spring is also affecting berry crops with Colin Ewers saying the low temperatures have resulted in a “very drawn-out flowering” in their 6.5 hectare boysenberry farm at Appleby Estate. That will delay harvesting by one or two weeks although would not necessarily impact on yield. “Last year we were picking our first crop on December 10, but we’ll be a good week or two later this year. We aren’t too concerned because it’s always what happens over harvest that’s most important.”

Student rugby players to continue with clubs Monique Bergman

A new rugby initiative between Waimea catchment rugby clubs and Waimea College will be put in place next year, in the hope of retaining more player numbers at the under 14 years level. At present, all age grade rugby 14 years and above is played through secondary schools. Traditionally, schools have experienced a drop off in sport participation at this age, due to the transition to college. The new programme will see the rugby clubs working collaboratively with the college and will involve Wanderers Rugby, Waimea Old Boys Rugby and Rangers Rugby clubs. This coming season will see one team from Waimea Old Boys Rugby and Wanderers Rugby joining the school, with the aim of introducing four teams the following season. The clubs will provide the col-

lege with players, coaches and resources to assist in the delivery of a positive rugby experience for first year college players. The new Waimea College teams will be named the College Wanderers and College Waimea Old Boys for the first season and playing uniforms will be club jerseys with school socks and shorts. Jack Hahn, 13, from Waimea Intermediate likes the new initiative. “It is pretty good, I don’t really mind joining and a lot more friends will play rugby.” Steve Mitchell, operations and competitions manager at Tasman Rugby Union has been working with Waimea College director of sport, Daniel

Hobbs, and rugby administrator, Julie Bensemann, on the programme over the past six weeks. It is fully supported by the Tasman Rugby Union and the Rugby Administrator in Schools programme. “The collaboration is a natural evolution, many sporting clubs and schools need to work closer together to the betterment of players. “There is no ‘them versus us’, it is a 50-50 split, the clubs and the college have both made concessions and met in the middle. We have come to a mutual understanding and we are committed to the programme for a season-long trial,” says Daniel Hobbs. The programme will initially be a one year pilot, with a review process at the end of the season to ensure the participating members achieve their desired outcomes.

Nelson Hockey’s development officer, Craig Brett, on the Saxton Field hockey turf. Far left: The cover of the test programme the last time New Zealand played a test in Nelson, against Australia in 1952.

Now Open in Stoke!

Come and visit the friendly team at our brand new store, next to the Mad Butcher in Stoke.

Blacksticks back in Nelson after 62 years It took Nelson 50 years to host its first hockey test match and 62 years for its second. But Nelson Hockey’s Craig Brett is confident the wait will be much shorter for the next. The men’s Blacksticks team will host Canada in two test matches at Saxton Field this Tuesday and Wednesday night. It’s the first fully-fledged test match in Nelson since the city was awarded a test between New Zealand and Australia in 1952 to help celebrate Nelson Hockey’s 50th jubilee. Craig says with the infrastructure now in place, Nelson can look forward to more test hockey in the future. “We had the women’s Blacksticks here a few years ago to play an Indian side and while it wasn’t a full international, we had about 3000 people turn up so we’ve proven we can get the crowds. There is talk that we will get some more soon so we’ll see what happens. We’re keen as mustard to have them but we need to do a good job here first.” Both games start at 6.30pm and Craig is hoping for at least 1000 people for each game. “It’s a big, big buzz to have them in Nelson- and there have been a lot of people working behind the scenes to get them here. We would love Nelson to come out and see an international. Whatever sport you follow, watching any sport at the top level is a buzz and the Blacksticks have some world-class players.” Local fans will be hoping for a turnaround in fortune from the last game the city hosted in 1952. That day New Zealand lost to Australia on Trafalgar Park, with Nelson man Fred Gribble in the squad as a reserve forward. Fred was described in the official match day programme as having “good goal scoring ability”. President of Nelson Hockey at the time, B.V. Cox, wrote in the match day programme, “This is the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Nelson Hockey Association and we are deeply appreciative of the honour given us by the NZ Hockey Association in allocating this test match to Nelson.” Sixty two years later, Craig says the association is just as appreciative. “This is the pinnacle. Now we want to live up to our reputation so we get more in the future.” Tickets for sale at www.dashtickets.co.nz or at the gate.

Swimmers get pre-Christmas work out Andrew Board

Swimmers from around the top of the south took part in the annual Christmas Meet at Nayland Pools, on Saturday. The long-course meet is hosted by the Tasman Swim Club and saw plenty of personal bests and even a few records broken. Tasman Swim Club coach, Andy Adair, says the competition was a good workout, with the region’s top swimmers looking ahead to the Wellington champs in mid-January. “It’s really helpful if our kids have raced long course before Wellington and that meet is an important one this year because it’s the trial meet for the New Zealand team going to Australia.” He says 97 swimmers, aged between 7 and 18, took part in the day session and 98 in the evening session. “I thought it went really well, there was some excellent swimming there. It was good racing and good rehearsal.” Two record-breakers from the Tasman Swim Club, which is based at the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre, were Talya Harwood, who broke the 800 freestyle record for 15 year olds and Caitlin Delaney, who broke the 200 breaststroke record for 16 year olds.

The Lantern The Christmas Fairytale Imagine a story about the son of God coming to earth to an animal stable, surrounded by animals. He was born there because there was no room in the inn when his earthly family arrived at Jerusalem. Many of us know this scene - the nativity scene. It is seen in churches and homes throughout the world.

How this happens depends on us. Whether we choose to see the Christmas story as a nice fairy-tale or a world changing event. The difference for us is huge… it can change everything. So maybe this Christmas you will experience something more than a fairytale. - Owen Haring, Assistant Priest

The problem is this scene is completely wrong!

Youth Refuel Friday 12 December 7-9 pm The age range is 12-14 year olds.

Jesus wasn’t born in a stable, surrounded by animals. His family weren’t all alone. And yet most people believe this story is true - even Christians!

Children’s Play

Many of the dearly loved Christmas carols we sing get it wrong. If they were answers in an exam on the actual birth of Jesus, many would get low marks on accuracy.

Older Youth

The facts are Joseph returned to his home town - so there would have been relatives with which to stay. Family relationships and hospitality were incredibly important culturally. Mary would have had female relations with her at her birth. The manger Jesus slept in would have been inside the house and the animals outside. Not many people want livestock around while giving birth, do they?

The birth of Jesus is read more like a fairy tale. It’s sweet and lovely and it does give us a nice feeling. But the story of Jesus’ birth is far more than this. It is a life changing event for many people. It is the connection between humanity and the Divine. It is the reality that can change our reality.

ackNoWlEDgEmENt HART, June Margaret We would like to express our heart felt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support we have received from family, friends and the community in the last few weeks since our wonderful wife, mother, mother in law and “ nan-nan” passed away. Bramblewoods has been overwhelmed with visitors, phone calls, messages, baking, hot meals, wine, cards, toys, flowers, plants, trees, vouchers and casket painters. All of these gestures were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Aunty Elaine, Aunty Ruth, Amy and Jayden, Gran Biggs, Cushla Moir, Rachel Bartlett, The Ching Family, Sue

Paki Paki, Melinda Baigent, Melanie Grey, Liza Vass, Di at Wanderers Sports Club, Karen MacKenzie-Howe and the wonderful team at the Richmond Hospice Shop. Our loss is great, but you have all helped fill the void with love and laughter. Bramblewoods will never be the same again. We will watch for you in the stars. Wayne, Greg, Marianne, Glen, Cece and Alfie
